5000 Player Pong

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Sounds a bit daft but bare with me. Its actually an experiment in Hive Mind reasoning. At a Las Vegas conference a demonstration of some clever computer vision was being shown. People in the audience had a paddle with Red on one site and Green on t’other. A camera picked up all the audience and software then drew an image of the members as a red or green pixel on the main theater screen. Good so far?
The game of pong was then tested, with the right side of the conference hall controling the right paddle and vica versa. If the number of red paddles shown was higher than the green the paddle moved up, otherwise down it goes. Aparently the

Planetary Equinox

Since i updated to wordpress 2 i found that it can do an “import” of rss feeds. I quickly setup a beta test site on comscare and had a play. Later to realise that it only allowed File imports. Not to be outdone, i had a look around and found a very powerful syndication feed system called feedwordpress. I quickly implemented it (needed some source changing to suit WP2) and i was away, quickly adding feeds left right and center. After updating user author accounts which had been generated by the plugin i set about doing faces etc.

The outcome for all this messing around is basically a very pretty and powerful aggregation of all feeds. Unlike the standard planet

Conflicting Messages

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

So yeah, Christians, misunderstood? or simply the process of 2000 years of unchanging belief based on a book that was written by the “3rd person observer society”. Whatever they might be, they’re never going to have conflicting beliefs, oh no. So when i found that some rather horny christians had set up an online sex shop named “Wholly Love” i had to check something.
I do belive that religious types are against contraception, now i’m not one to really have a go at religion (hahaha, yeah right) but when i found that the Wholly Love site has just that for sale i was a bit confused. Do only SOME people do the NO CONTRACEPTION thing, or are

Egg-celent News

Ha ha, never to be outdone with cheesy headlines nor to fail my adoring public with my comedy wit, once again my vocabularic fortay has won your eyes once more.
Todays tit-bit of news worthy goss is about penguins. :) I’m sure many of you will remember the sad tale of woe for a pair of love sick parents for their 3-month old baby who was stolen from their careing flippers just before christmas.
Toga, the 3 month old Jackass Penguin was stolen from its enclosure in Amazon World on the Isle of Wight. World wide coverage and £25,000 rewards later but Toga was never heard of again :(
But there is still hope, Kyala and Oscar havnt lost

Transparent Screens

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

This awsome bit of kit isnt in production yet, but its going to be sweet as when it does.
The idea of transparency in computers is old, being able to see through an image to what lies behind is a common thing to do these days. But the next generation of LCD monitors are being created which are transparent themselves, making your icons seem to float in mid air or giving the impression that you can put your hand through the screen to grab the items behind your monitor.
How its done? Who knows, all i know is its very clever and i must get my hands on one…
There is demonistrations of the systems working

Playing with Planets

Friday, January 13th, 2006

Hokay, so i havent blogged in a while, and for this i appologise, however, to make upfor it i have been doing constructive things, i have added a Style switcher to the Planet, its basically to stop James complaining at me about overlined links which he hates oh so much. I decided that rather than trying to convince him to make his own damn CSS and be happy i’d make it so everyone could be happy with their own styles. And hence, the style switcher was born.
Goto our Planet and check it out on the right, and for all the geeks in the area, if you want to add your own style to the

Planet Comscare - Updated

Monday, December 12th, 2005

Ok, i just realised that most people probably dont even know this exists yet. So just in case i’ll warn thee all.
No longer do u have to check +5 blogs to see if anyone has posted, nor use clever software to tell you, for neil has setup a Planet for us to use. I tried making my own RSS aggregator, and it worked real nice as well, apart from James dates causing problems. But now, after coaxing james to actually fix his damn code, we have a working planet.
CS Blog Planet planet.warmfusion.co.uk
Hurrah for us.
Update: Since setting up the planet, neil realised that he’d have to turn off the machine it

Rat Attack

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

This is frankly astounding for its implications on modern data processing. Scientists at the University of Florida have managed to culture a ‘brain’ of 25,000 neurons laid over a grid of 60 electrodes which are able to control a simulation of an f-22 on a desktop computer. “When we first hooked them up, the plane ‘crashed’ all the time,” Dr DeMarse said. “But over time, the neural network slowly adapts as the brain learns to control the pitch and roll of the aircraft. After a while, it produces a nice straight and level trajectory.”
The results of this research will almost certainly affect a great deal in the realms of machine vision, data mining and control

Politicaly Correct

Monday, November 21st, 2005

Not to be met with “Deferred Success” with my blog efforts of keeping at least one post per day, i thought i’d share with you the world gone mad.
Its a fun place to live in the modern day, when AD (Short for : Anno Domini Nostri Jesu Christi) wants to be changed to C.E. for Common Era to avoid religious overtones with the date. Or possibly you’re a feminist and want Women to be spelt Womyn to distance it from Men… dispite the “men” part of women actaully refering to human [ Derivation ] or how about something more Southern, security staff in the land of Oz were banned from using “Mate” to address members
